This is the shareware version 2.10 of FONTEDIT. FONTEDIT requires a graphics
display, CGA or higher. A Hercules graphics display can be used provided you
run the MSHERC.COM TSR before running FONTEDIT.
FONTEDIT requires DOS 2.1 or above, and approximately 220K of available RAM,
i.e., memory not used by DOS or TSRs. FONTEDIT will run from a floppy drive,
but it is best to run it from a hard disk in order to allow room for temporary
files and for the font file to grow.
To begin FONTEDIT, simply type:
fed21 [filename]
where the optional parameter [filename] is the font file to view and edit.
Wildcards (such as *, ?) are OK.
The font file being edited with FONTEDIT must be of the HP LaserJet bitmapped
format. Outline fonts available in the LaserJet III are not yet supported;
however, the LaserJet III will still accept bitmapped fonts. You cannot change
the built-in Courier and TTY fonts of the laser printer. Postscript font files
are not supported. If you are using any programs to compress font files in
order to conserve disk space, make sure your files are uncompressed before
using FONTEDIT.
FONTEDIT and TrueType: Although FONTEDIT cannot edit TrueType fonts
directly, it can edit bitmap renditions of TrueType fonts at given point
sizes. When Windows 3.1 prints a document with a LaserJet driver, it will
render the TrueType font(s) as bitmap fonts in the various point sizes used
in the document and download them to the printer. If you print to a disk file
rather than the printer, FONTEDIT will allow you to edit the bitmap
renditions of those TrueType fonts. Registered users can obtain a program to
strip out the non-font data from the file, leaving only the bitmap renditions
of the TrueType fonts.
A sample font file called "handwrit.sft" is included, and sample TIFF and PCX
graphics files "sample1.tif" & "sample2.pcx" are included for demonstrating the
Import TIFF and Import PCX features of FONTEDIT.
Included here is either the user's manual "fontedit.doc", or "femanual.exe"
which is a self-extracting version of the user's manual. If "femanual.exe" is
here, simply type "femanual" to create the FONTEDIT manual.
If using the DOS access feature, make sure your PATH includes the subdirectory
containing FONTEDIT.
Your CONFIG.SYS file should allow at least 10 files to be opened (i.e., it
should include the statement "FILES=10"). More than 10 is OK, too.
If you see the message "Input run-time module path:" when you start FONTEDIT,
quit with Ctrl-C, and make sure that the run time module BRUN45.EXE is in
either the current directory, or a directory in your DOS PATH.
Do not use .EXE file compressors (such as lzexe or pklite) on the overlay file
FED21B.EXE, or on the run time module BRUN45.EXE.
If you run FONTEDIT on a network in a DOS window under Microsoft Windows,
you won't be able to use any of the printer functions such as Download Font,
Screen Dump, etc. However, you can still otherwise edit the font.
If you experience erratic mouse behavior in FONTEDIT, your mouse driver may
be old and in need of an update. Microsoft mouse driver version 8.20a works
fine with FONTEDIT and is available with FONTEDIT upon request.
The run time modules BRUN45.EXE, MSHERC.COM, and MOUSE.COM are copyrighted
by Microsoft, and are distributed with FONTEDIT in accordance with the
QuickBasic 4.5 licensing agreement.
Portions (c) Copyright Genus Microprogramming, Inc. 1988-1991. This bit of
legalese is required by Genus since FONTEDIT uses their PCX toolkit to support
importing characters from PCX images.
Users who register with a $30 fee will promptly receive an enhanced version of
FONTEDIT which can save editing changes to the font file. If there are any
questions or comments, give me a call or send a note.
